The functional equation \[ x+g(y+f(x))=y+g(x+f(y)) \] is studied and all the continuous solutions of this equation are determined. Specifically, the author proves that the pair \((f,g)\) of continuous functions is a solution of the above functional equation if and only if \( (f,g)\) is equivalent to one of the following pairs: \[ f(x)=\log(e^{-x}+c),~~~ g(x)=\log(e^x+1)~~~(x\in \mathbb{R}; c>0).\] \[f(x)=cx, ~~~ g(x)=x/(1-c)~~~(x\in \mathbb{R}, c\neq 1). \] \[f(x)=-x, ~ g(x)=(x/2) +h(x)~(x\in \mathbb{R})~h\in C(\mathbb{R}) \text{\; is even.}\] \[f(x)=\max(-x,0),~~ g(x)=\max(x,0) ~~ (x\in \mathbb{R}). \] Finally, as a consequence of the above result, it is shown that compatible continuous homogeneous means are not necessarily power means.
