In this article the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel model in two space dimensions is considered. The model equations describe the behavior of microorgansims as an interplay between attraction due to chemotaxis and diffusion. Starting with an earlier work by \textit{I. Gallagher} and \textit{T. Gallay} [Math. Ann. 332, No. 2, 287--327 (2005; Zbl 1096.35102)] for the vorticity equation with arbitrary initial vorticity in the space of finite Borel measures, the authors prove local-in-time existence and uniqueness of mild solutions for the Patlak-Keller-Segel model with initial data \(\mu\) in the space of non-negative, finite Borel measures on \(\mathbb R^2\) such that \(\max_{x\in \mathbb R^2} \mu(\{x\})<8 \pi\). They also establish local Lipschitz continuity (with respect to the total variation norm) of the solution maps for both the problem considered by Gallagher and Gallay and the Patlak-Keller-Segel model. The existence/uniqueness proof is geared towards a contraction mapping argument which itself is based on linearization around self-similar spreading solutions and a decomposition of solutions analogous to the one employed by Gallagher and Gallay.
