The classical unital is the set of absolute points and non-absolute lines of \(PG_ 2(q^ 2)\) equipped with a unitary polarity. The Ree-unital is given via the Ree group: the points are the Sylow 3-subgroups and the blocks the involution where a point is contained in a block if its normalizer contains the involution. In both cases one gets a design with parameters \(2-(q^ 3+1,q+1,1),\) where q is arbitrary for the classical unital and an odd power of 3 for the Ree unital, and with automorphism group doubly-transitive on points. The authors prove that in both cases (for U(q) one must assume \(q\neq 2)\) there is a 5-subset of points for which, in the respective automorphism group, there is no automorphism fixing the 5-subset (as a set).
