The authors study smoothing techniques in the bivariate case, for the three-directional hat function (the Courant element) and for the corresponding pair of hat functions on the four-directional mesh. The studies in the three-directional case can be essentially reduced to techniques which are already known [cf. \textit{C. de Boor, K. Höllig} and \textit{S. Riemenschneider}, Box splines. Applied Mathematical Sciences. 98. New York, NY: Springer-Verlag (1993; Zbl 0814.41012)]. In the four-directional case, the smoothing masks are matrix masks and the idea of proof employed in this case is new.
