The paper under review is concerned with the equation \[ -\Delta_{{\mathbf p}}u= f(u) \] in open subsets \(\Omega\subseteq \mathbb R^n\) \((n\geq 2)\), where \[ \Delta_{{\mathbf p}}u:= \sum^n_{i=1} \frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \Bigg(\Bigg| \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_i} \Bigg|^{p_i-2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_i}\Bigg) \] (\({\mathbf p}= (p_1,\dots,p_n)\), \(p_i>1\) for \(i=1,\dots,n\)). The critical exponent \(p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p})\) is defined to be \[ \begin{aligned} & p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p}) := \sup\Bigg\{ Q>0;\;\forall \,q\in (\max\{p_1,\dots, p_n\},Q), \;\forall\, \lambda \in\mathbb R\\ & \qquad\qquad \qquad \;\not\exists \text{ nontrivial, nonnegative solutions}\\ &\qquad\qquad \qquad \quad u\in W^{1,{\mathbf p}}_{\text{loc}} (\mathbb R^n) \cap L^\infty_{\text{loc}} (\mathbb R^n) \text{ of }-\Delta_{{\mathbf p}} u=\lambda u^{q-1}\Bigg\},\\ & p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p}):= \max\{p_1,\dots,p_n\} \text{ if the set of \(Q\)'s above is empty}. \end{aligned}\tag{*} \] The first theorem of the paper presents an a priori estimate on nonnegative solutions \(u\in W^{1,{\mathbf p}}_{\text{loc}} (\mathbb R^n) \cap L^\infty_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb R^n)\) of (1) provided that \(1< p_i<q<p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p})\) \((i=1,\dots,n)\), \(\lambda>0\) and \(f\in C([0,+\infty))\) satisfying \[ f(t) = t^{q-1}(\lambda+\text{o}(1)) \quad \text{as}\quad t\to +\infty. \] The next two theorems give sufficient conditions for \(p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p})= +\infty\), for estimates on \(p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p})\), and for \[ p_{\text{cr}}({\mathbf p}) \to \frac{np}{n-p} \quad \text{as}\quad p_i \to p \quad (i=1,\dots,n). \] Finally, the author proves a nonexistence result for the equation \(-\Delta_{{\mathbf p}} u= u^{q-1}\).
