Conditions are derived for the synchronization of the nonlinear system \(x'(t) = A x(t) + B f(x(t))\), \(x(t_0)=x_0\), exhibiting a chaotic behaviour, by the system \(y'(t) = A y(t) + B f(y(t)) + k(t) (x(t)-y(t))\), \(y(t_0)=y_0\). Here \(A\), \(B\) are \(n \times n\) real matrices, \(f(x) \in \mathbb{R}^n\) is supposed to be a Lipschitz continuous function and \(k(t)\) is the intermittent control gain, taking only a constant non-zero value \(k\) in the intervals \([t_0 + m \omega, t_0 + m \omega + \delta]\). By synchronization we mean that the error \(\|y(t) - x(t)\|\) tends to zero as time goes on. Precise bounds on the parameters \(k\), \(\delta\) and \(\omega\) are obtained in such a way that the second system synchronizes the first one. It is shown, in particular, that this synchronization strongly depends on the rate of control duration \(\theta \equiv \delta/\omega\), rather than on \(\omega\) or \(\delta\) separately. In consequence, the admissible region in the space of parameters \((k,\theta)\) is determined guaranteeing synchronization. The results are then illustrated on the well-known chaotic Chua oscillator.
