The \(J\)-flow is a parabolic flow on a Kähler manifold \((X,\omega)\) and was introduced by Donaldson and Chen. Its fixed point corresponds to the ``inverse'' Hessian equation \(c\omega_{\phi}^n = n\omega_{\phi}^{n-1} \alpha\) where \(\alpha\) is another Kähler form. It is known to exist for a long time and to converge to its fixed point if \(c\omega^{n-1}-(n-1)\alpha \omega^{n-2}>0\). It is of course quite difficult to test this condition (Lejim-Szèkelyhidi and Collins-Szèkelyhidi made some progress on this aspect of ``testing'' for toric varieties). In this paper the author studies the \(J\)-flow on toric varieties. The ``transition'' map \(U_t\) between the moment maps induced by \(\omega_{\phi}\) and \(\alpha\) is a diffeomorphism (Proposition 3.1). He studies the evolution of this transition map. It turns out (after the Legendre transform) to satisfy a quasilinear parabolic system of equations (equation 4.3) which is degenerate on the toric divisors. The author proves that \(DU_t\) has positive eigenvalues and that they are bounded above on an open subset of the toric variety. He also proves (Theorem 4.5) that the \(J\)-flow converges if and only if the eigenvalues of \(DU_t\) are bounded below by a positive number.
