The authors study a class \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) of pointed Hopf algebras generalizing \(U_q(\mathfrak g)\) for a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\), constructed by \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch} and \textit{H.-J. Schneider} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 577, 81-104 (2004; Zbl 1084.16027)]. \((D,L)\) is a generic datum of finite Cartan type for a free Abelian group \(G\), \(L\) the linking datum. The authors of the paper under review study which \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) are Calabi-Yau (CY). An algebra \(A\) is called CY if \(A\) is homologically smooth, i.e., \(A\) has a bounded resolution of finitely-generated projective \(A\)-\(A\) bimodules, and \(\text{Ext}^i_{A^c}(A,A^c)\) is isomorphic to \(A\) if \(i\) is the dimension of \(A\) and is \(0\) otherwise. They characterize those \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) which are CY. In particular, \(U_q(\mathfrak g)\) is CY. The CY property of \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) is determined by that of \(U(D,0)\), which is the smash product of a Nichols algebra \(B(V)\) with the group algebra of \(G\). The authors give a criterion for \(B(V)\) to be CY. They show that \(B(V)\) is CY if and only if \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) is not CY. A key idea in their development is that of the rigid dualizing complex of \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\). They classify all Calabi-Yau \(U(\mathcal D,\lambda)\) of dimensions 1, 2, 3 and 4.
