The authors derive an explicit expression for the exponent \(\beta\) in the fractal uncertainty principle as introduced by \textit{J. Bourgain} and \textit{S. Dyatlov} [Ann. Math. (2) 187, No. 3, 825--867 (2018; Zbl 1392.37065)]. The expression for \(\beta\) involves the dimension \(\delta\), the regularity constant \(C_R\) for the regular set, and is meaningful only if \(\delta \geq \frac12\). A consequence of this result is the existence of an essential spectral gap for convex co-compact hyperbolic surfaces when the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set is close to one.
