    The authors study the notion of Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes which has been introduced recently by \textit{C. A. Athanasiadis} and \textit{W. Welker} [Arxiv:0909.1931] ; a \((d-1)\)-dimensional Buchsbaum simplicial complex \(\Delta\) is called Buchsbaum\(^*\) over a field \(\mathbf k\) if \[ \text{dim}_{\mathbf k}\widetilde{H}_{d-2}(| \Delta| -p;{\mathbf k}) = \text{dim}_{\mathbf k}\widetilde{H}_{d-2}(| \Delta|;{\mathbf k}) \] for every \(p \in | \Delta|\). These complexes specialize Buchsbaum complexes in the same way that 2-CM complexes specialize Cohen-Macaulay complexes. It is known that the rank-selected subcomplexes of a balanced Cohen-Macaulay complex are Cohen-Macaulay. \textit{R. P. Stanley} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 249, 139--157 (1979; Zbl 0411.05012)] and the authors prove a similar result for the class of doubly Buchsbaum complexes (which contains the class of Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes by Corollary 2.9 of [Arxiv:0909.1931]): for every \(S \subset \{1,\ldots,d\}\), the rank selected subcomplex \(\Delta_S\) of a \((d-1)\)-dimensional balanced 2-Buchsbaum simplicial complex over \({\mathbf k}\) is Buchsbaum\(^*\) over \({\mathbf k}\). Next, they obtain lower bounds on the \(h\)-numbers of \((d-1)\)-dimensional balanced Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes: \(\displaystyle h_2(\Delta) \geq \frac{1}{d} \binom{d}{2} h_1(\Delta)\) (if \(\Delta\) is connected and \(d \geq 3\)) and \(\displaystyle h_3(\Delta) \geq \frac{1}{d} \binom{d}{3} h_1(\Delta)\) (if \(d \geq 4\)). Finally, the authors study the \(h'\)-numbers of \(m\)-Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes (for \(m \in {\mathbf N}\), a \((d-1)\)-dimensional simplicial complex \(\Delta\) is said \(m\)-Buchsbaum\(^*\) if \(\Delta\) is Buchsbaum and \(\Delta -A\) is Buchsbaum\(^*\) of dimension \((d-1)\) for every set \(A\) of vertices of \(\Delta\) of cardinality less than \(m\)): if a \((d-1)\)-dimensional flag simplicial complex is \(m\)-Buchsbaum\(^*\), they prove that \(\displaystyle h'_j(\Delta) \geq \binom{d}{j}m^j\) for \(0 \leq j \leq d\) and that \(\Delta\) is isomorphic to the \(d\)-fold join of the \(0\)-dimensional simplicial complex consisting of \((m+1)\) vertices if the equality is reached for some \(j \in \{1,\ldots,d-1 \}\). This extends a result given in [Arxiv:0909.1931] and answers a question put in the same article.
