The authors investigate the Cauchy problem associated with the isentropic compressible Euler equations with damping in dimension \(d\) (see (1.1) and (1.2) on page 1). The variables are the density \(\rho (x,t)\), the momentum \(m(x,t)=\rho(x,t)u(x,t)\), and the pressure \(P=P(\rho)\). The paper improves the \(L^2\)-decay rate of the solution in \(\mathbb{R}^3\) previously obtained by \textit{Z. Tan} and \textit{G. Wu} [J. Differ. Equations 252, No. 2, 1546--1561 (2012; Zbl 1237.35131)], \textit{Z. Tan} and \textit{Y. Wang} [J. Differ. Equations 254, No. 4, 1686--1704 (2013; Zbl 1259.35162)], under the assumption that the initial perturbation in \(H^3\)-norm is small. Also, under weaker conditions on the initial data, the authors establish some pointwise estimates for \(\rho\) and \(m\) in dimension \(d\geq 3\) with respect to the space variable or time.
