A normal version of Brauer's height zero conjecture

From MaRDI portal

The Itô-Michler theorem asserts that a prime \(p\) does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of a finite group \(G\) if and only if \(G\) has a normal and abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroup [\textit{G. O. Michler}, Lect. Notes Math. 1178, 129--142 (1986; Zbl 0628.20013)].\N\NThe paper studies a block-theoretic analogue of the normality part of this theorem. More precisely, it considers the principal blocks \(B_q(G)\) for primes \(q\ne p\) and asks whether the condition that \(p\) does not divide \(\chi(1)\) for all \(\chi\in \mathrm{Irr}(B_q(G))\) forces a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\) to be normal.\N\NOne of the main results, Theorem A, shows that this is indeed the case: for a finite group \(G\) and a prime \(p\), a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) is normal in \(G\) if and only if for every prime \(q\ne p\) dividing \(|G|\) and every \(\chi\in \mathrm{Irr}(B_q(G))\), the prime \(p\) does not divide \(\chi(1)\). Combined with the principal block case of Brauer's height zero conjecture, this yields a refinement of the Itô-Michler theorem characterizing normal abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroups in terms of characters belonging to principal blocks.\N\NThe paper also proves a two-prime statement. Theorem C shows that if \(p\) and \(q\) are distinct primes and \(q\) does not divide the degree of any irreducible character in \(B_p(G)\), then a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\) normalizes a Sylow \(q\)-subgroup of \(G\), under the explicit hypothesis that \(G\) has no composition factor among five exceptional triples listed in Theorem 2.1.
