A note on the finitely generated fixed subgroup property

From MaRDI portal

The paper under review investigates when the direct product \(G \times \mathbb{Z}^m\) satisfies the finitely generated fixed subgroup property of automorphisms (FGFPa), using the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant \(\Sigma^1(G)\). The authors prove that if \(G \times \mathbb{Z}^m\) has FGFPa, then \(G\) must have FGFPa and certain BNS conditions must hold: either \(\mathrm{SQ}(G) \subset \Sigma^1(G)\) or \(\Sigma^1(G) = S(G)\), depending on the value of \(m\). These conditions are shown to be sufficient when \(G\) is centreless and has the weakly Howson property.\N\NIn addition, the authors present examples of groups \(G\) for which \(G \times \mathbb{Z}^m\) satisfies FGFPa without assuming the weakly Howson property, including finitely generated nilpotent groups and certain hyperbolic \(3\)-manifold groups. The discussion highlights the role of geometric invariants and subgroup intersection properties in understanding fixed subgroups of automorphisms and concludes with open questions about the necessity of the Howson condition.
