A regularity class for the roots of nonnegative functions

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We investigate the regularity of the positive roots of a non-negative function of one-variable. A modified H"older space is introduced such that if then . This provides sufficient conditions to overcome the usual limitation in the square root case (alpha=1/2) for H"older functions that f1/2 need be no more than C1 in general. We also derive bounds on the wavelet coefficients of falpha, which provide a finer understanding of its local regularity.

The authors introduce modified Hölder classes \({\mathcal F}^{\beta} = \{f : f^{\alpha}\in {\mathcal C}^{\alpha\beta}, 0 < \alpha \leq 1\}\). Sufficient conditions are found for nonnegative continuous function \(f\) on \([0,1]\) from the Hölder space \({\mathcal C}^{\beta}\) to satisfies the condition \(f^{\alpha}\in {\mathcal C}^{\alpha\beta}\), \(0 < \alpha \leq 1\). They also derive bounds on the wavelet coefficients of \(f^{\alpha}\) that provide additional insight into the local regularity of \(f^{\alpha}\). These results are applied in nonparametric statistics.
