Characterization of almost maximally almost-periodic groups

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: Let G be an abelian group. We prove that a group G admits a Hausdorff group topology au such that the von Neumann radical mathbfn(G,au) of (G,au) is non-trivial and finite iff G has a non-trivial finite subgroup. If G is a topological group, then mathbfn(mathbfn(G))ot=mathbfn(G) if and only if mathbfn(G) is not dually embedded. In particular, mathbfn(mathbfn(mathbbZ,au))=mathbfn(mathbbZ,au) for any Hausdorff group topology au on mathbbZ.
