Defects of liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation
From MaRDI portal
Abstract: We prove that the zero set of a minimizer of the modified Ericksen energy for nematic liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation consists locally of isolated points and a finite union of H"older continuous curves with only finitely many crossings.
The authors describe the local structure of the zero set of a minimizer for the energy of the modified Ericksen model in the theory of liquid crystals. The proof is based on an appropriate decomposition of the zero set.
