Fractals and diffusive growth
The author explains on simple examples (such as the Cantor set, the percolation cluster) a notion of self-similar geometrical structure and a description of its dilatational symmetry in terms of the fractal (or Hausdorff) dimension. Then he discusses a growth of similar structures in the course of an electrodeposition process. To study this process, the author uses the discrete or continuous diffusion-limited aggregation model that describes the particles which walk randomly until they meet a cluster and stick to it permanently. The continuous diffusion-limited aggregation model is represented by the Laplace equation with a nonlinear condition of growth on a free boundary of cluster. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0974.00042].
