Fuzzy extension of rough sets theory

From MaRDI portal

In the paper a notion of fuzzy rough approximation space (FRAS for short), being some abstract rough approximation space [see the author's paper in: L. Polkowski and A. Skowron (eds.), Rough sets in knowledge discovery, Physica Verlag, 1-40 (1998)], is defined and investigated. For any \(A\subseteq X\), \(\chi_A\) denotes the characteristic functional of \(A\). Any fuzzy set \(f:X\mapsto[0,1]\) is approximated by a pair \((I(f),O(f))\) of subsets of \(X\) called the inner and outer support, respectively. Set \(f\) is crisp in case \(I(f)=O(f)\). A FRAS is defined as a quadruple \(\langle[0,1]^X,\{0,1\}^{X},\square,\diamondsuit\rangle\) where, slightly abusing the notation, \([0, 1]^{X}\) is the Brouwer-Zadeh distributive lattice of all fuzzy sets (the approximable elements), \(\{0,1\}^{X}\) is the Boolean lattice of all crisp sets (the definable elements), and \(\square\) (resp., \(\diamondsuit\)) is the inner (outer) approximation map associating with any fuzzy set \(f\) its crisp necessity (possibility) \(\square(f)=\chi_{I(f)}\) (resp., \(\diamondsuit(f)= \chi_{O(f)}\)). Next, it is shown how to realize FRAS's by special collections of fuzzy sets called fuzzy identity resolutions. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0891.00026].
