Generalized periodicity theorems
Let \(R\) be an associative ring and let \(0 \longrightarrow M \longrightarrow L \longrightarrow M \longrightarrow 0 \ (*)\) be a short exact sequence of (right) \(R\)-modules.The main results of the papers are the following:\N\NTheorem 0. Let \(R\) be a ring and \(\mathcal{S}\) be a class of (strongly) finitely presented \(R\)-modules, containing the free \(R\)-module \(R\) and closed under direct summands, extensions, and kernels of epimorphisms. Put \(\mathcal{B} = \mathcal{S}^{\perp_1}\), \(\mathcal{A} = {}^{\perp_1}\mathcal{B}\), \(\mathcal{C} = \varinjlim \mathcal{S}\), and \(\mathcal{D} = \mathcal{C}^{\perp_1}\). Then the following assertions hold:\N\N(a) For any short exact sequence \((*)\) with \(L \in \mathcal{A}\) and \(M \in \mathcal{C}\), one has \(M \in \mathcal{A}\).\N\N(b) For any short exact sequence \((*)\) with \(L \in \mathcal{D}\) and \(M \in \mathcal{B}\), one has \(M \in \mathcal{D}\).\N\NTheorem A. Let \(\mathcal{K}\) be a Grothendieck abelian category, and let \(\kappa\) be a regular cardinal such that \(\mathcal{K}\) is a locally \(\kappa\)-presentable category. Let \(\mathcal{S} \subset \mathcal{K}\) be a class of (some) \(\kappa\)-presentable objects closed under transfinitely iterated extensions indexed by ordinals smaller than \(\kappa\). Put \(\mathcal{C} = \varinjlim^{(\kappa)} \mathcal{S} \subset \mathcal{K}\), and assume that the class \(\mathcal{C}\) is deconstructible in \(\mathcal{K}\). Denote by \(\mathcal{A} = \operatorname{Fil}(\mathcal{S})^\oplus\) the class of all direct summands of transfinitely iterated extensions of objects from \(\mathcal{S}\) in \(\mathcal{K}\). Let \(\mathcal{B}' = \mathcal{S}^{\perp_{\ge 1}} \cap \mathcal{C}\) be the class of all objects \(B \in \mathcal{C}\) such that \(\operatorname{Ext}^n_{\mathcal{K}}(S, B) = 0\) for all \(S \in \mathcal{S}\) and \(n \ge 1\). Let \(\mathcal{A}' = \mathcal{C} \cap {}^\perp{^1} \mathcal{B}'\) be the class of all objects \(A \in \mathcal{C}\) such that \(\operatorname{Ext}^1_{\mathcal{K}}(A, B) = 0\) for all \(B \in \mathcal{B}'\) (so \(\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{A}' \subset \mathcal{C}\)). Then, in any acyclic complex of objects from \(\mathcal{A}\) with the objects of cocycles belonging to \(\mathcal{C}\), the objects of cocycles actually belong to \(\mathcal{A}'\).\N\NTheorem B. Let \(\mathcal{K}\) be a Grothendieck category and \(\mathcal{S} \subset \mathcal{K}\) be a class of objects. Let \(\mathcal{T} \subset \mathcal{K}\) be any class of objects of finite projective dimension in \(\mathcal{K}\) such that the union \(\mathcal{S} \cup \mathcal{T}\) contains a set of generators for \(\mathcal{K}\). Denote by \(\mathcal{C} \subset \mathcal{K}\) the closure of \(\mathcal{S} \cup \mathcal{T}\) under coproducts, direct limits, extensions, and kernels of epimorphisms in \(\mathcal{K}\). Let \(\mathcal{B} = \mathcal{S}^{\perp_1}\) be the class of all objects \(B \in \mathcal{K}\) such that \(\operatorname{Ext}^1_{\mathcal{K}}(S, B) = 0\) for all \(S \in \mathcal{S}\), and let \(\mathcal{D} = \mathcal{C}^{\perp_1}\) be the class of all objects \(D \in \mathcal{K}\) such that \(\operatorname{Ext}^1_{\mathcal{K}}(C, D) = 0\) for all \(C \in \mathcal{C}\). Then, for any acyclic complex of objects from \(\mathcal{D}\) with the objects of cocycles belonging to \(\mathcal{B}\), the objects of cocycles actually belong to \(\mathcal{D}\).
