Hodge modules and cobordism classes

In [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2024, No. 19, 13085--13105 (2024; Zbl 1571.14006)] the first two authors show a conjecture of \textit{J.-P. Brasselet} et al. [J. Topol. Anal. 2, No. 1, 1--55 (2010; Zbl 1190.14009)] on \(L\)-classes of projective rational homology manifolds: there is an equality of characteristic classes of singular varieties between the Goresky-MacPherson \(L\)-class \(L_*(X)\) and the Hirzebruch homology class \(T_{1,*}(X)\). In this paper the theorem is proved in the more general case of a compact complex algebraic variety that is a rational homology manifold, using the theory of mixed Hodge modules.\N\NThere is a natural transformation from the Grothendieck group of varieties over a complex algebraic variety \(X\) to the even degree Borel-Moore homology tensored with \(\mathbb Q[y]\): \(T_{y*}\colon K_0(\text{Var}/X) \to H_{2\bullet}^{\text{BM}}(X,\mathbb Q)[y]\), compatible with the push-forward by proper morphisms. For \(y=1\) this map factorizes as \( K_0(\text{Var}/X) \to \Omega(X) \to H_{2\bullet}(X,\mathbb Q)\), where \(\Omega(X)\) is the cobordism class group of self-dual bounded \(\mathbb Q\)-complexes with constructible cohomology sheaves on \(X\) and the second map transformation is the homology \(L\)-class transformation \(L_*\).\N\NThis paper shows that the cobordism class of a polarization of a Hodge module defines a natural transformation from the Grothendieck group of Hodge modules to the cobordism group \(\Omega(X)\) with real coefficients. A new construction is given of \(\Omega(X)\), with a careful discussion of the signs involved. The result implies a new proof of the well-definedness of the natural transformation from \( K_0(\text{Var}/X)\) to \(\Omega(X)\) with real coefficients A slight extension of the conjecture of Brasselet, Schürmann and Yokura, for the case that \(X\) has \(\mathbb Q\)-homologically isolated singularities, follows as corollary.
