Isotropy of 8-dimensional quadratic forms over function fields of quadrics

From MaRDI portal

Let \(\phi\) be an anisotropic \(8\)-dimensional quadratic form of trivial determinant over a field \(F\) of characteristic \(\neq 2\). In papers by \textit{A. Laghribi} [Duke Math. J. 85, 397-410 (1996; Zbl 0865.11030), \(K\)-Theory 12, 371-383 (1997; Zbl 0893.11016)], and the authors [Isotropy of virtual Albert forms over function fields of quadrics, Math. Nachr. (to appear)], the question for which anisotropic forms \(\psi\) the form \(\phi\) becomes isotropic over the function field \(F(\psi)\) has been answered completely except in the case \(\dim\psi =4\), \(\det\psi\neq 1\) and \(\text{ind}(C(\phi))=4\), where \(C(\phi)\) denotes the Clifford algebra of \(\phi\). This remaining case is treated in the present paper. It is easy to show that \(\phi\) becomes isotropic over \(F(\psi)\) if there exists an \(8\)-dimensional form \(\phi^*\) over \(F\) such that \(\psi\) is similar to a subform of \(\phi^*\) and either \(\phi\perp\phi^*\in I^4F\) or \(\phi^*\) is a \(3\)-fold Pfister form and \(\phi\) contains a Pfister neighbor of \(\phi^*\). The authors show that this sufficient condition for the isotropy of \(\phi\) over \(F(\psi)\) is also necessary except possibly if \(\text{ind}(C(\phi)\otimes_FC_0(\psi))=4\), and in this case a counterexample is given. The methods of proof are similar to those used by the authors in [J. Algebra 209, 65-93 (1998; Zbl 0914.11016)].
