The paper presents a survey of problems associated with the controllability of discrete-time dynamical systems, prepared on the basis of 114 recent publications. Basic concepts and several definitions of various kinds of controllability are given. The famous controllability conditions for linear, nonlinear and bilinear discrete dynamical systems are presented. Controllability criteria for discrete systems having control restrictions are also formulated. Finite discrete systems (finite automata, sequential machines, etc.) whose generalized state coordinates are values in a finite set are also investigated and controllability criteria for them are formulated. The attainable sets for various kinds of discrete dynamical systems are analysed and their properties are pointed out. The possibilities of applications of new algebraic-geometric methods of modern mathematics (algebraic geometry, Lie groups and algebras, Galois fields, categories and functors) in discrete systems control theory are indicated. Some generalizations and modifications of the results are considered.
