The author proves, for a large class of subharmonic functions \(\varphi\) including the subharmonic (but nonharmonic) polynomials, that if \(e^{- \varphi}f\in L^ p(\mathbb{C})\), then the equation \(\partial u/\partial\bar z=f\) admits a solution \(u\) such that \(e^{-\varphi}u\in L^ p(\mathbb{C})\). Here \(1\leq p\leq\infty\). This problem derives from the study of the \(\overline\partial_ b\) equation on three-dimensional, compact, pseudoconvex \(CR\) manifolds of finite type; this application is discussed in another paper of the author [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 52, Part 3, 63-82 (1991)]. The analysis also has led to a counterexample to analytic hypoellipticity of \(\overline\partial_ b\) on domains of finite type; this application is discussed in a paper of the author and \textit{Geller} [Counterexamples to analytic hypoellipticity for domains of finite type, Ann. Math. (to appear)].
