The paper is devoted to a detailed study of the metric projection \(P_G\), for \(G\) a finite-dimensional subspace of the real Lebesgue space \(L_1=L_1(T,\mu)\). It turns out that the theory of metric projection in \(L_1\) contrasts dramatically from the theory in \(C_0(T)\), a case considered by the second author in a paper to appear in SIAM J. Math. Anal. The key roles in this study are played by a condition of \textit{A. Lazar} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 134, 503--525 (1968; Zbl 0174.17102)] by the atomic part \(\operatorname{at}(G)\) of \(\operatorname(G)=\cup\{\operatorname{supp}(g): g\in G\}\) and by the Lyapunov convexity theorem. For instance, if \(\operatorname(G)\) is a finite union of atoms, then \(P_G\) is uniformly Hausdorff strongly unique and Lipschitz continuous. For a one-dimensional subspace \(G = \operatorname{span}\{g\}\) of \(L_1\) the following are equivalent: (1) \(P_G\) has a continuous selection; (2) \(P_G\) has a Lipschitz selection; (3) \(g\) satisfies the Lazar condition. Also, the lover semicontinuity, the Lipschitz continuity and the uniform Hausdorff strong uniqueness of \(P_G\) are all equivalent.
