The authors show that the ergodic theorem of \textit{C. T. Ionescu Tulcea} and \textit{G. Marinescu} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 52, 140-147 (1950; Zbl 0040.06502)] can be derived from the strong form of the decomposition theorem of \textit{K. DeLeeuw} and \textit{I. Glicksberg} [Acta Math. 105, 63-97 (1961; Zbl 0104.05501)]. A weak form of the former is also derived from the weak form of the latter. This complements work of \textit{R. Sine} [Rocky Mt. J. Math. 21, No. 4, 1373-1383 (1991; Zbl 0830.47024)] deriving asymptotic periodicity results for constricted Markov operators from the deLeeuw-Glicksberg decomposition. Reviewer's remarks: (i) Using the concept of essential spectrum, \textit{H. Hennion} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 118, No. 2, 627-634 (1993; Zbl 0772.60049)] gave a proof of the Ionescu Tulcea-Marinescu theorem which needs no longer the compatibility condition for the two Banach spaces involved. The present authors' approach still needs the compatibility condition. (ii) The reviewer is unable to understand why in several places (starting with the title of the paper!) ``Glicksberg'' is spelled as ``Glickstein''.
