In this paper a Cartier-Voros type Selberg trace formula is proved for a noncompact Fuchsian group \(\Gamma \subset \text{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{R})\). This type of trace formula is a modification of the usual one in such a way that the test function no longer has to be even. For the proof the author uses results of \textit{I. Efrat} [Commun. Math. Phys. 119, 443-451 (1988; Zbl 0661.10038)] and \textit{S. Koyama} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 113, 303-311 (1991; Zbl 0744.11031)] describing the determinant of the Laplacian as the product of zeta-functions associated to \(\Gamma \smallsetminus \mathbb{H}\). Applying this trace formula to the test function \(h_t (\rho)= \exp(-t \rho)\) gives the meromorphic continuation and a functional equation of the theta type function \[ \Theta_\Gamma (t)= \sum^\infty_{n=0} e^{-t\rho_n} -{m_0 \over 2}-{1 \over 2 \pi} \int^\infty_0 {\varphi' \over \varphi} \left({1\over 2} +i\rho \right) e^{-t \rho} d\rho,\;t> 0. \] Here \(1/4+ \rho^2_n\) corresponds to the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian, \(m_0\) is the multiplicity of the eigenvalue \(1/4\), and \(\varphi\) denotes the scattering determinant. \(\Theta_\Gamma (t)\) may be considered as an analogue for the Selberg zeta function of the theta type function \(\Theta_\zeta (t)= \sum_\gamma e^{-t \gamma}\) associated to the nontrivial zeros \(\rho= 1/2+ i\gamma \in\mathbb{H}\) of the Riemann zeta function \(\zeta(s)\).
