The author considers maps from the (unit) square \(I^2= [0,1] \times [0, 1]\) into itself of the type \((x,y) \mapsto (\Phi (x,y),x)\) which are unimodal, that is, such that \(\Phi (x,0)= \Phi(x,1) =\Phi (0,y) =0\), \(\Phi\) is of the class \(C^1\) and there is a point \((\widetilde x, \widetilde y)\) such that \(\Phi (\widetilde x, \widetilde y) >\Phi(x,y)\) for all \((x, y) \in\text{int} (I^2)\) and \((\widetilde x, \widetilde y)\) is the unique point at which both partial derivatives of \(\Phi\) vanish simultaneously. More precisely, there are considered families \(F= \{F_{\lambda, s}\}\) of such mappings being of the form \(F_{\lambda,s} (x,y)= (\lambda f(x) (g(y))^s,x)\) where \(\lambda \in (0,1]\), \(s>0\) are parameters and \(f\) and \(g\) satisfy suitable additional conditions (in particular, \(g=h \circ f\) with a \(C^1\)-diffeomorphism of \([0,1])\). There are relations between properties of critical sets of unimodal maps and properties of invariant sets. One can show the existence of unimodal maps with various types of homoclinical trajectories assuming some conditions on critical sets. Theorem 1 of the present paper says that under suitable assumptions there are so-called symbolic sequences constructed for families of the type \(F\), being periodic. Theorem 2 gives existence of stationary hyperbolic points and describes some properties of stable and unstable manifolds for these points. Existence of so-called snap-back repellers is established by Theorem 3. There are only sketches of proofs.
