The authors develop a canonical analysis both without constraints and under constraints for subspaces of Euclidean space. They essentially use operators; this functional approach is in particular justified, since canonical analysis of subspaces attains its full interest only when definitions and results are extended to the infinite dimensional case, thus allowing one to develop completely the concepts of linear and nonlinear canonical analysis. In Section 2, they give notations and some results which are useful for the sequel; they study a concept of angle between subspaces, which leads in Section 3 to equivalent definitions of canonical analysis of subspaces. In Section 3 some properties of this analysis are studied, the problem of invariance is considered, and a canonical analysis under linear constraints is investigated. Finally, they sketch the study of canonical analysis of linear mappings. In Section 4, they apply the definitions and some of the results to the field of probability and statistics.
