Let \((W,S)\) be a Coxeter system. For any \(J\subseteq S\), let \(W_J\) be the subgroup of \(W\) generated by \(J\) and let \(X_J\) be the unique set of minimal length left coset representatives of \(W_J\). In the group algebra \(\mathbb{Q} W\), let \({\mathcal X}_J\) be the sum of the elements in \(X_J\). \textit{L. Solomon} proved [in J. Algebra 41, 255-268 (1976; Zbl 0355.20007)] that the relation \({\mathcal X}_J{\mathcal X}_K=\sum_La_{JKL}{\mathcal X}_L\) holds for any \(J,K,L\subseteq S\), where \(a_{JKL}\) is the number of elements \(x\in X_J^{-1}\cap X_K\) such that \(x^{-1}Jx\cap K=L\). Then the descent algebra \(\Sigma_W\) of \(W\) over \(\mathbb{Q}\) is by definition the subalgebra of \(\mathbb{Q} W\) generated by \({\mathcal X}_J\), \(J\subseteq S\). In the paper under review, the author gives certain combinatorial descriptions of the radical and irreducible representations for the descent algebra of the Weyl group of type \(D\) over any field.
