Let \(I\) be an ideal of a ring \(R\). The authors define the notions of semiregular, semiperfect and perfect rings relative to \(I\). When \(I\) is the Jacobson radical of the ring \(R\), they recover the standard classes of semiregular, semiperfect and perfect rings, respectively. More precisely, \(R\) is called right \(I\)-semiregular if whenever \(X\) is a finitely generated submodule of a finitely generated projective module \(P\), then \(X=A\oplus B\) where \(A\) is a summand of \(P\) and \(B\subseteq PI\). \(R\) is right \(I\)-semiperfect if the above decomposition holds for any submodule \(X\) of \(P\), and \(R\) is right \(I\)-perfect if the above definition of \(I\)-semiperfect rings holds for any projective module \(P\). The authors completely characterize the classes of right \(I\)-semiregular, right \(I\)-semiperfect and right \(I\)-perfect rings in the case when \(I\) is the right socle, or the right singular ideal, or the intersection of both. As applications, structure theorems are obtained for right CEP-rings \(R\) (i.e. rings such that every cyclic right module is essentially embedded in a projective module) with \(J(R)^2=0\) and for QF-rings with \(J(R)^2=0\).
