The aim of the paper under review is to suggest a new approach to study representations of classical Lie superalgebras with atypical central character. Let \(\mathfrak{g}\) be a classical Lie superalgebra and \(\chi\) be an atypical central character of \(\mathfrak{g}\). Let further \(U^{\chi}\) denote the quotient of the universal enveloping algebra of \(\mathfrak{g}\) modulo the ideal, generated by the kernel of \(\chi\). It turns out that, in contrast to the case of typical \(\chi\), the algebra \(U^{\chi}\) has a non-trivial Jacobson radical. The quotient \(\overline{U}^{\chi}\) of \(U^{\chi}\) modulo this radical turns out to have a new center. It is still unclear how to describe this center explicitly in the general case. However, this center is sufficiently large and the author even conjectures that this center separates almost all finite-dimensional representations. In the present paper this center is calculated for the superalgebras sl\((1| n)\) and psl\((2| 2)\). This is then used to obtain new character formulae for finite- and infinite-dimensional simple highest weight modules, and generalizations of Borel-Bott-Weil and Beilinson-Bernstein localization theorems.
