A matrix \(A\) has signed null space if for each \(A'\) with the same sign pattern as \(A\), the set of sign patterns of solutions to \(A'x=0\) is equal to that of \(Ax=0\). This paper provides several new characterisations of matrices with signed null space and uses them to provide new (and in some cases simpler) proofs of some results originally due to \textit{S.-J. Kim} and \textit{B. L. Shader} [Linear Algebra Appl. 313, No. 1--3, 21--40 (2000; Zbl 0958.15004)]. The authors then characterise some variations such as ``nearly signed null space'' (meaning the matrix does not have signed null space, but if any column is deleted it will have signed null space) and ``doubly signed null space'' (meaning that both the matrix and its transpose have signed null space).
