Let \(f:\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}\to\mathbb{R},g:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\). Then the functional equation \[ f(xy)-f(x)-f(y)=g(x+y)-g(x)g(y),\quad \text{with}\quad f(1)=0, \, g(1)=1 \] holds for all \(x,y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}\) if and only if there are additive functions \(a,A:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) such that \(A(1)=0\) and \[ f(x)=a(\ln |x|),\,x\in \mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}\quad\text{and}\quad g(x)=\exp A(x),\,x\in\mathbb{R}. \] This is the main result of the paper which shows that the logarithmic \(f(xy)=f(x)+f(y), x,y\in\mathbb{R}_+\) and the exponential \(g(x+y)=g(x)g(y), x,y \in \mathbb{R}_+\) functional equations are strongly alien with respect to \(\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}\) and \(\mathbb{R}\) provided that \(f(1)=0, g(1)=1.\) It also gives the solution of the problem posed by \textit{Z. Kominek} and \textit{J. Sikorska} [Aequationes Math. 90, No. 1, 107--121 (2016; Zbl 1382.39031)].
