Let \(\mathbb{B}^q\subset \mathbb{C}^q\) be the unit ball, and let \(f: \mathbb{B}^q\to\mathbb{B}^q\) be a self-map. A \textit{linearization} of \(f\) is an identification \[ h\circ f = \varphi\circ h, \] where \(h: \mathbb{B}^q\to \Omega\) is a holomorphic map, with \(\Omega\) a complex variety of dimension at most \(q\), and \(\varphi:\Omega\to \Omega\) is an automorphism. In a sense, this amounts to conjugating the self-map \(f\) with an automorphism. Given several self-maps \(f_i\) such that \(f_i\circ f_j=f_j\circ f_i\), this article studies when it is possible to find a single \(h:\mathbb{B}^q\to \Omega\) and several automorphisms \(\varphi_i\) simmultaneously linearizing the \(f_i\)'s, and under which conditions one has \(\dim \Omega \lneq q\). It is shown that one can take \(\Omega=\mathbb{B}^d\) with \(d\leq q\) and that this choice is universal in the sense that all other linearizations with \(\Omega\) Kobayashi hyperbolic factorize through \(\mathbb{B}^d\). From this the authors conclude several results on the dynamic type of commuting self-maps \(f\) and \(g\) such as ``if \(f\) is hyperbolic, then \(g\) is also hyperbolic''.
