Let \(E\) be a normed space. For \(x,y \in E\), we say that \(x\) is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to \(y\) if \(\| x+\lambda y\|\geq \| x\| \) for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{R}\); and we write \(x\perp_B y\). Let \(B(X,Y)\) denote the space of all bounded linear operators between Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\), and put \(B(X)=B(X,X)\). We say that an operator \(T\in B(X,Y)\) attains its norm if there exists \(x_0\) in the unit sphere of \(X\) such that \(\| T(x_0)\| =\| T\| \) and set \(M_T:=\{x\in X: \| x\| =1,\, \| T\| =\| Tx\| \}\). An operator \(T\in B(X,Y)\) is said to have the Bhatia-Šemrl property (BŠ property) if for each \(A\) with \(T\perp_B A\) there exists \(x\in M_T\) such that \(Tx\perp_B Ax\). \textit{R. Bhatia} and \textit{P. Šemrl} showed that any finite-dimensional Hilbert space has the BŠ property [Linear Algebra Appl. 287, No. 1--3, 77--85 (1999; Zbl 0937.15023)]. There exists, however, a finite-dimensional normed space \(X\) and a bounded linear operator \(T\) on \(X\) without the BŠ property; see [\textit{C.-K. Li} and \textit{H. Schneider}, ibid. 347, No. 1--3, 115--122 (2002; Zbl 1003.15028)]. \textit{D. Sain} et al. [ibid. 476, 85--97 (2015; Zbl 1335.46008)] proved that there are sufficiently many operators with the BŠ property in \(B(X)\) when \(X\) is a finite-dimensional strictly convex real Banach space. The author of the present paper proves that for a Banach space \(X\) with the Radon-Nikodým property, the set of norm attaining operators having the BŠ property is dense in \(B(X,Y)\). He also studies the denseness of the set of norm attaining operators without the BŠ property and shows that the set of norm attaining operators without the BŠ property is dense in \(B(L_1([0, 1]), X)\) when \(X\) has the Radon-Nikodým property. Moreover, he investigates stability of denseness of norm attaining operators under some direct sums.
