A locus for transnational exchanges: European mathematical journals for students and teachers, 1860s--1914 (Q1725679)

The paper provides a very nice survey of mathematical journals for students and teachers published in the period 1860--1914. The study is not exhaustive, but is based on a representative selection of Belgian, British, French and Italian journals, and leads to some general conclusions that also apply to other journals at the intermediate level between elementary and advanced mathematics. Indeed, these journals shared many common features, such as the predominance of geometrical topics, emphasis on elegant new proofs of known results, inclusion of problems for the readers and their solutions, reviews of new textbooks, discussion of educational and historical questions, etc. Consequently, although the journals were primarily aimed at (and adapted for) national audience, they were also widely read and appreciated abroad, received submissions from foreign authors, and contributed to the creation of a shared international culture of advanced elementary mathematics.
