The authors consider the amplitude of the solution for Helmholtz equation and study its asymptotic expansions. State-of-the-art expansions are usually obtained by a pseudo-differential decomposition of the Dirichlet to Neumann (DtN) operator. The authors derive new asymptotic expansions of the normal derivative of the total field using a first and second order approximation of the DtN operator. This expansion is useful for the approximation in numerical solvers based on integral equations in high-frequency scattering problems. Additionally, it is shown that the ansatz using the new expansion leads to more accurate approximations of the solution around the shadow and the deep shadow regions compared to the previous ansatz.
