For a complex affine variety \(M\) and a semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\), let \({\mathfrak g}^M\) be the Lie algebra of currents on \(M\). For irreducible representations \(\pi_1,\dots,\pi_n\) of \(\mathfrak g\) and pairwise different points \({\mathcal Z}_1,\dots,{\mathcal Z}_n\) of \(M\), the tensor product \(\pi_1({\mathcal Z}_1)\otimes\cdots\otimes\pi_n({\mathcal Z}_n)\) is an irreducible representation of \({\mathfrak g}^M\) isomorphic to \(U({\mathfrak g}^M)/I\), where \(I=I(\pi_1,\dots,\pi_n;{\mathcal Z}_1,\ldots,{\mathcal Z}_n)\) is the left annihilator in \(U({\mathfrak g}^M)\) of \(v=v_1\otimes\cdots\otimes v_n\), for the highest weight vectors \(v_i\in\pi_i\). This gives a family \(\mathcal N\) of ideals of \(U({\mathfrak g}^M)\) labeled by \(M\times\cdots\times M\) without diagonals. The closure \(\widetilde {\mathcal N}\) of \(\mathcal N\) in the space of all left ideals is an algebraic variety. The case \(M=\mathbb C\) and \({\mathfrak g}=sl_2\) was completely understood in a paper by B. Feigin and E. Feigin, in terms of the fusion product introduced in a paper by the present authors. Now they concentrate on the case when all representations are 2-dimensional. Then \(\widetilde{\mathcal N}\) is just the \(n\)th symmetric power of \(\mathbb C\) and the fusion product is universal in some sense. The representations which appear are called Weyl modules in the sense of Chari and Pressley. The authors show that local Weyl modules are finite-dimensional and generalize the tensor product decomposition theorem of Chari and Pressley. More explicit results are stated for currents on a non-singular affine variety of dimension \(d\) with coefficients in the Lie algebra \(sl_r\). The Weyl modules with highest weights proportional to the vector representation one are related to the multi-dimensional analogs of harmonic functions. The dimensions of such local Weyl modules are calculated for \(d=1\), when the dimensions are equal to powers of \(r\), and for \(d=2\) when the dimensions are given by products of the higher Catalan numbers.
