The authors give a mathematical framework for analyzing bandgaps in bubble phononic crystals at low frequencies. A periodic arrangement of bubbles is considered and their Minnaert resonance is used. In fact, a new formula for the quasi-periodic Minnaert resonance frequencies of arbitrary shaped bubbles is obtained. Existence of subwavelength phononic bandgaps is proved, and its width is estimated. The analytical methods involve quasi-periodic layer potentials, Floquet theory, and Gohberg-Sigal theory. A number of asymptotic expansions are given in the appendices. Finally, numerical experiments are run to show the subwavelength bandgap openings.
