Let \(J=(-\infty,B)\) when \(B \leq \infty\), or \(J=(-\infty,B]\) when \(B< \infty\), and denote by \(M\) the class of nondecreasing functions \(U\) on \(J\) such that \(\lim_{x \to-\infty}U(x)=0\) and \(\int^ c_{- \infty}U(x)dx< \infty\) for all \(c\in J\). The strings \(S=S(J,U)\) considered have mass distribution function \(U\in M\) stretched by unit of force along \(J\). The associated boundary value problem is \((*)\) \(\ell[y]- \lambda y=0\) on \(J\), \(\lim_{x \to-\infty}y(x)=1\), where \(\ell[y]=-{d \over dU(x)}y^ +(x)\) and \(y^ +\) denotes the right derivative. A spectral function for \(S\) (and \((*))\) was defined by the author in [Sov. Math. Dokl. 5, 875-879 (1964); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 157, 34-37 (1964; Zbl 0168.337)] with the property that for any nondecreasing function \(\mu(\lambda)\), \(0<\lambda<\infty\), there exists a string \(S\) whose spectral function \(\tau\) satisfies \(\tau(\lambda)> \mu(\lambda)\) for all \(\lambda \in[1,\infty)\). For strings of Krein's class \(S_ 1\) with boundary condition at the regular end-point it is known that \(\tau(\lambda)=o(\lambda)\) as \(\lambda \to \infty\). In this paper sufficiency conditions on \(U\) are given for \(\ln \tau(\lambda)=o(\lambda)\) as \(\lambda \to \infty\).
