Coideal subalgebras of a Hopf algebra can be formally understood as a noncommutative generalisation of a homogeneous space. This is a point of view advocated by the geometric interpretation of quantum group theory. In recent years several interesting examples of such coideal subalgebras or quantum homogeneous spaces, including quantum spheres and other quantum compact symmetric spaces, were found. Given a Hopf algebra \(A\) with a bijective antipode, the authors study the structure of (right) coideal subalgebras \(B\) of \(A\), i.e., subalgebras for which the restriction of the coproduct in \(A\) defines a right \(A\)-comodule structure on \(B\), in case \(A\) is a faithfully flat left or right \(B\)-module. They show that the compact quantum symmetric spaces of quantum special unitary groups, such as deformations of \(\mathrm{SU}(n)/\mathrm{SO}(n)\) or \(\mathrm{SU}(2n)/\mathrm{Sp}(n)\) satisfy this faithful flatness condition. They also prove that the corresponding quotient coalgebras \(A/AB^{+}\), where \(B^{+}\) is the kernel of the counit of \(A\) restricted to \(B\), is cosemisimple.
