The authors study the following set-up. Let \(X\) be a smooth projective variety and \(f: X \to Y\) an algebraic fiber space with \(Y\) of maximal Albanese dimension. They prove that if a plurigenus \(p_m(X) = 1\) for some \(m \geq 2\), then the Albanese map alb\(_X\) of \(X\) is surjective and that if \(\kappa (X) =0\) then the general fiber of alb\(_X\) has geometric genus \(0\). As a corollary they prove that \(X\) is birational to an abelian variety if and only if \(q(X) = \dim (X)\) and \(p_2(X) = 1\).
