This paper examines the connection between the classical moment problem and the spectral theory of operators generated by infinite band matrices with operator elements. Such a connection has been extensively studied in the literature for the case of second order difference operators (or Jacobi matrices), where a central role is played by the so-called Stone theorem characterizing the Jacobi matrix representation of a selfadjoint operator by means of cyclic vectors. In the paper under review, an analogue of the Stone theorem is obtained. A solvability criterion for the inverse spectral problem, namely that of recovering the operator from the moment sequence of its Weyl matrix (introduced in analogy to the Jacobi matrix), is established. Conditions ensuring that the elements of the moment sequence admit an integral representation as moments of an operator-valued measure are given. The connection of the inverse problem method with the theory of Hermite-Padé approximations is exhibited by describing the Weyl matrix in terms of the convergence of its Hermite-Padé approximants by a sequence of multi-indices.
