The authors prove the existence of global solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for the Kirchhoff type quasilinear wave equation in exterior domains with a localized weakly nonlinear dissipation. They show that if the dissipation \(\rho(x,v)\) is effective on \(w\) near a certain part of the boundary and near infinity and has a linear growth as \(|v|\to \infty\), then the equation admits a unique \(H^2\)-solution for each small data \((u_0,u_1)\in H^2\cap H^0_1\times H^0_1\).
