Let \(A : X \to 2^{X^*}\) be a maximal monotone operator defined on a real Banach space \(X\) with \(X^*\) being the continuous dual of \(X\). In the main result (Theorem 3.1) of the note under review, it is shown that if \(A\) is of Fitzpatrick-Phelps type, then A must necessarily be of dense type. Thus Theorem 3.1 settles an open question posed in 2001 by \textit{S. Simons} [Set-Valued Anal. 9, No. 4, 391--409 (2001; Zbl 1022.47033)]. As a consequence, Theorem 3.1 together with some existing results in the literature (see, e.g., \textit{S. Simons} [From Hahn--Banach to monotonicity. 2nd expanded ed. 2nd expanded ed. Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1693. Berlin: Springer (2008; Zbl 1131.47050)]) imply that the 3 notions of monotonicity, namely, the Fitzpatrick-Phelps type, the dense type and the negative infimum type coincides.
