The paper studies discrete dynamical systems \(f: X\to X\) where \(X\) is a locally compact metric space and \(f\) is a homeomorphism. The term chaos applied to \(f\) means that, firstly, some invariant subset \(I\subset X\) is semi-conjugate to the Bernoulli shift \(\sigma: \Sigma_2\to \Sigma_2\) and, secondly, that infinitely many of periodic orbits \(c\in \Sigma_2\) are represented by periodic orbits of \(f:X\to X\). The paper gives a generalisation of the geometric criterion for detecting chaotic dynamics in discrete dynamical systems \(f: X\to X\) suggested in [\textit{M. Mrozek} and the author, Topology Appl. 152, No. 1--2, 70--82 (2005; Zbl 1078.37011)].
