Let \(V\) be a real-valued potential on \(\mathbb{R}^2\) satisfying the decay estimate \(|V(x) \lesssim (1+|x|^2)^{-\beta}\) at infinity for some \(\beta>3/2\), and denote by \(H:=-\Delta+V\) the associated Schrödinger operator. Of interest here is a dispersive estimate for the operator \(e^{itH}\), that is, roughly speaking, an \(L^\infty\)-estimate on \(e^{itH}f\) in terms of the \(L^1\)-norm of the function \(f\). More precisely, denote by \(P_{ac} = P_{ac}(H)\) the orthogonal projection of \(H\) onto the absolutely continuous subspace of \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)\), and suppose that zero is a regular point of the spectrum of \(H\). Then, under the above assumptions on \(V\), \[ \|w^{-1}e^{itH}P_{ac}f\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^2)} \lesssim \frac{1}{|t|\log^2(|t|)}\|wf\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^2)} \tag{1} \] for \(|t|>2\), where \(w(x) = \log^2(2+|x|)\) is an appropriate logarithmic weight function. This generalizes a two-dimensional result of \textit{M. Murata} [J. Funct. Anal. 49, 10--56 (1982; Zbl 0499.35019)], who proved a similar estimate in the \(L^2\)--\(L^2\) case, with the same rate of decay in \(t\), but under slightly stronger assumptions on the weight function \(w\) and the decay rate of the potential, as well as a one-dimensional \(L^1\)-\(L^\infty\) estimate due to \textit{W. Schlag} [Ann. Math. Stud. 163, 255--285 (2007; Zbl 1143.35001)]. That zero is a regular point of the spectrum of \(H\) is equivalent to the boundedness of the resolvent \[ R_V^\pm (\lambda^2):=R_V(\lambda^2 \pm i0) = (H-(\lambda^2 \pm i0))^{-1} \] as an operator between certain weighted \(L^2\)-spaces as \(\lambda \to 0\). The following resolvent bound, to whose proof the bulk of the paper is devoted, is the main element in the proof of (1): under the same assumptions as above, \[ \sup_{L\geq 1} \left|\int_0^\infty e^{it\lambda^2}\lambda\chi(\lambda/L) [R_V^+(\lambda^2)-R_V^-(\lambda^2)](x,y)\,d\lambda \right| \lesssim \frac{\sqrt{w(x)w(y)}}{t\log^2(t)} + \frac{\langle x\rangle^\frac{3}{2}\langle y\rangle^\frac{3}{2}}{t^{1+\alpha}} \tag{2} \] for any \(\alpha \in (0,\min\{1/4, \beta-3/2\})\) and \(|t|>2\), where \(\chi\) is a suitable cut-off function supported in a neighbourhood of zero, and \(\langle z \rangle = (1+|z|^2)^{1/2}\). The main result (1) then follows from interpolating between (2) and a similar estimate of \textit{W. Schlag} [Commun. Math. Phys. 257, No. 1, 87--117 (2005; Zbl 1134.35321)], where the left-hand side of (2) is shown to be \(O(1/t)\) for \(t \to \infty\).
