Variable structure controllers with sliding sectors are proposed for both continuous- and discrete-time controllable systems. Inside these sliding sectors, a given normed quantity decreases with a zero input. The design of every sliding sector is based on solving an algebraic Riccati equation. The variable structure control law is designed to form the system state to move from outside to inside a sliding sector and the given norm of the system state to keep decreasing in the state space. The robustness with respect to parameter uncertainties is also discussed. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.
