By the remarkable theorem of \textit{C. D. Hacon} and \textit{J. McKernan} [Invent. Math. 166, No. 1, 1--25 (2006; Zbl 1121.14011)], \textit{S. Takayama} [Invent. Math. 165, No. 3, 551--587 (2006; Zbl 1108.14031)], and \textit{H. Tsuji} [Osaka J. Math. 43, No. 4, 967--995 (2006; Zbl 1142.14012)], for an integer \(n > 0\), there exists a constant \(r_n\) such that the pluricanonical map \(\varphi_m\) is birational for all \(m \geq r_n\) and for all minimal projective \(n\)-folds of general type. It is an important problem to find an explicit bound for \(r_n\). When \(n \leq 2\), one can take \(r_1 = 3, r_2=5\). For \(n=3\), the inequality \(r_3 \leq 57\) was established by a series of works of J. A. Chen and the first author (see the references in the paper under review). Now, let \(X\) be a minimal projective \(3\)-fold of general type, and \(p_g\) be the geometric genus of \(X\). It is known that \(\varphi_5\) is birational if \(p_g \geq 4\). The aim of the paper under review is to consider the case that \(p_g \leq 3\). The first main result says that if \(p_g = 1\), then \(\varphi_{17}\) is birational and \(\varphi_{16}\) is birational possibly except one case (Theorem 1.3). When \(p_g=3\), it is known that \(\varphi_6\) is birational. The second main result gives a characterization when \(\varphi_5\) is not birational for the case that \(p_g=3\) (Theorem 1.4). The authors of the paper announce a characterization when \(\varphi_6\) is not birational for the case that \(p_g =2\).
