The authors establish direct estimates of the rate of weighted simultaneous approximation by the Szász-Mirakjan operator \(S_n\) for smooth functions in the supremum norm on the non-negative semi-axis. They consider Jacobi-type weights and the estimates are stated in terms of appropriate moduli of smoothness or \(K\)-functionals.\par The authors make use of the weighted Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness \(\omega_{\varphi}^2(f,t)_w\) and the weighted modulus of continuity \[\omega (f,t)_w:=\sup_{0<h\leq t}\Vert w \overrightarrow{\triangle}_hf \Vert ,\] where \[\overrightarrow{\triangle}_hf(x):=f(x+h)-f(x),\ x\geq 0,\] and \(\Vert \cdot \Vert \) is the essential supremum norm on \([0,\infty)\). \par \(C[0,\infty)\) denotes the space of the continuous, not necessarily bounded functions on \([0,\infty)\). \(L_{\infty}(J)\) is the space of the essentially bounded Lebesgue measurable function on the interval \(J\). \(AC_{\text{loc}}^m(0,\infty)\) denotes the set of the functions which along with their derivatives up to order \(m\) are absolutely continuous on \([a, b]\) for every \([a, b]\subset (0,\infty)\).\par Theorem. Let \(r\in \mathbb{N}_+\). Let \(f\in C[0,\infty)\) be such that \(f\in AC_{\text{loc}}^{r-1}(0,\infty)\) and \(wf^{(r)}\in L_{\infty }[0,\infty)\), where \[w(x)=w(\gamma_0,\gamma_{\infty};x)=\left(\frac{x}{1+x}\right)^{\gamma_0}(1+x)^{\gamma_{\infty }}\] (a) If \(\gamma_0=0\) or \(\gamma_{\infty }\leq 0\), then \[ \Vert w(S_nf-f)^{(r)} \Vert \leq c\left( \omega_{\varphi}^2(f^{(r)},n^{-1/2})_w+\omega(f^{(r)},n^{-1})_w\right),\ n\geq n_0.\] (b) If \(0<\gamma_0<r\) and \(\gamma_{\infty }> 0\), then \[ \Vert w(S_nf-f)^{(r)} \Vert \leq c \omega_{\varphi}^2(f^{(r)},n^{-1/2})_w,\ n\geq n_0. \] The constant \(c>0\) is independent of \(f\) and \(n\), whereas \(n_0\geq 1\) is independent of \(f\).\par A similar result in terms of an appropriate \(K\)-functional is also proved. \par A good list of references quoted in the paper gives account of the first and also recent results related to the quantitative side of the approximation by this classical Szász-Mirakjan operator.
